[Peptidoglycan recognition proteins] PGRP constitutes a family of conserved proteins that participate in the activation of various innate immune responses by serving as pattern recognition proteins (Kurata, 2004; Royet and Dziarski, 2007; Guan and Mariuzza, 2007). PGRP proteins have been found in insects, mollusks, echinoderms, and vertebrates, but not in nematodes or plants (Dziarski and Gupta, 2006). They possess the ability to bind peptidoglycans, which are polymers of alternating N-acetylglucosamine (NAG) and N-acetylmuramic acid (NAM) cross-linked by short peptide stems, or fragments thereof, derived from bacterial cell walls. These innate immune receptors distinguish between Peptidoglycans from different bacteria by strategies involving recognition of the composition of the Peptidoglycan
