[placental protein-4] PP4 is a 35 kDa placental protein found mainly in the placental tissue with very little secretion into the maternal bloodstream (Bohn et al, 1985). PP4 has anticoagulant activity and appears to be a potent inhibitor of thromboplastin (Shidara, 1984). The protein binds specifically to phospholipid membranes and inhibits the blood coagulation cascade by preventing formation of the extrinsic pathway activator (Osterud, 1984). The human cDNA has been cloned by Grundmann et al (1988). Sequence analysis shows that PP4 is identical with Annexin-5.
