The acronym stands for proline-arginine 39 residues (RRRPRPPYLPRPRPPPFFPPRLPPRIPPGFPPRFPPRFPamide). The protein belongs to the class of antimicrobial Cathelicidins and appears to be the porcine counterpart of FALL39 (Agerberth et al, 1996). This proline- and arginine-rich pig antibacterial peptide of 39 amino acids has been isolated originally by Agerberth et al (1991) from the upper part of the small intestine. The protein is produced by porcine neutrophils (Shi et al, 1994) and also in the bone marrow. Expression of PR-39 is upregulated by bacterial lipopolysaccharides, IL6, bacterial infections, and retinoic acid (Wu et al, 2000).
