This cell type has been described by Díaz-Carballo et al (2014) as a population of atypical cells associated with acquired resistance to cytostatic drugs and features of cancer stem cells. This morphological cell type is plasmodium-like and is said to be ubiquitous both in cell lines resistant to etoposide and in patient/xenograft material. These giant cells with a main giant nucleus are characterized by the presence of many daughter cells inside their cytoplasm, which is delimited by a common external membrane.
