[receptor for advanced glycosylation end products] The approved gene symbol for this receptor is AGER [advanced glycosylation end product-specific receptor].
The gene on human chromosome 6p21.3 has been identified by Sugaya et al (1994). The receptor is a multiligand member of the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell surface molecules.
RAGE is the receptor for AGE (advanced glycosylation end product), a complex and heterogeneous group of compounds that are obtained as end products of a series of reactions involving the nonenzymatic glycosylation in vivo of cellular proteins, lipoproteins, or nucleic acids. Thus, RAGE is a pattern recognition receptor that binds multiple ligands derived from a damaged cell environment.
