This protein of 86 kDa is the major surface glycoprotein of human respiratory syncytial virus. Glycoprotein G is the attachment protein of respiratory syncytial virus (Levine et al, 1987). The protein itself has a length of 298 amino acids (Wertz et al, 1985). About 60 % of its mass is contributed by carbohydrate residues, most of which is in the form of O-linked oligosaccharides. Two mature forms of glycoprotein G synthesized from alternative initiation codons have been described: an anchored type 2 integral membrane form and a smaller form that is secreted into the medium of infected cells (Roberts et al, 1994). The secreted form of Glycoprotein G can directly induce IL5 and IL13, producing pulmonary eosinophilia and enhanced illness in RSV-challenged mice
