[Shrimp ovarian peritrophin] SOP is a major protein in the jelly layer and cortical rods that envelope oocytes of penaeoid shrimps and are thought to play a role in the protection of spawned eggs. These proteins contain domains homologous to the chitin-binding domains of insect intestinal peritrophins.
Fenneropenaeus merguiensis ovarian peritrophin (Fm-SOP) from Banana prawn (Penaeus merguiensis) has been identified by Loongyai et al (2007). Fm-SOP has been shown to bind to chitin, displays chitinase activity and efficiently inhibits the growth of Vibrio harveyi and Staphylococcus aureus. Thus it may play a significant role in the protection of the spawned eggs against pathogens.
