[Scylla serrata antimicrobial protein] This antimicrobial protein of 11 kDa (102 amino acids) has been isolated by Yedery and Reddy (2009) from granular hemocytes of the mangrove crab Scylla serrata (Indian mud crab; renamed Scylla paramamosain). The protein is highly similar to scygonadin, a male-specific antimicrobial ppeptide isolated from the ejaculatory duct of Scylla serrata. SSAP shows antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria. SSAP is expressed in several tissues of both male and female crabs and is thought to play a role in regulating the immunity of the crab upon microbial infection.
