Semastatin-5B is a bioactive fragment (see also: cryptides) derived from the SEMA5B [semaphorin 5B] gene. Semastatin-5B [TSWSPCSASCGGGHYQRTR] corresponds to residues 916-934 of semaphorin 5B (semaphorin 5B(916-934)). Semastatin-5B has been shown to inhibit the proliferation and migration of human umbilical vein endothelial cells in vitro and is therefore thought to possess anti-angiogenic properties in vivo (Karagiannis and Popel, 2008).
For other proteins (or fragments thereof) with at least one additional activity that differs from the established 'classical' activity of the parent protein see also: Dual identity proteins and Cryptides MiniCOPE Dictionary.
