Collective term for a family of peptides found in human plasma that stimulate cartilage growth by inducing the synthesis of collagen and other proteins (Daughaday, 1972).
Somatomedin A is a mixture of IGF-1 and IGF-2 (Enberg et al, 1984). Rat basic somatomedin has been shown to be IGF-1 (Rubin et al, 1982).
A sequence contained within the N-terminal region of vitronectin has been termed Somatomedin B.
Somatomedin C, the major member of this group of proteins, is identical with IGF-1 (Klapper et al, 1983; Hintz and Rinderknecht, 1980). See also:
