abbr. SLO. SLO is a secreted protein of 61 kDa (541 amino acid residues (Kehoe et al, 1987). It is the prototype of a large family of cholesterol-binding cytolysins that are produced by Gram-positive organisms. Members of this family include pneumolysin, perfringolysin, and listerolysin (Alouf and Geoffrey, 1991).
Oligomerization of individual monomers in the membrane created membrane complexes that form very large stable pores with a diameter of 30-35 nm (Buckingham and Duncan, 1983; Bhakdi et al, 1985).
Walev et al (2002) have reported that a limited number of pores can be sealed in a calcium ion-dependent process and that resealing is followed by the release of IL6 and IL8 from keratinocytes and from endothelial cells. The
