This cell type constitutes a distinct class of glial cells found in the nervous system of Drosophila melanogaster and other insects. The cells are a component of the blood-brain barrier (see also: Perineurial glial cells) (Stork et al, 2008; for overview see: Yildirim et al, 2019). Subperineurial glial cells are thin, highly interdigitated cells with epithelial character and form septate junctions, which block paracellular diffusion and thus seal the nervous system from the hemolymph (Carlson et al, 2000; for overview see: Limmer et al, 2014). A reduction of septate junction length, as can be seen in specific Drosophila melanogaster mutants, impairs blood-brain barrier functions (Bainton et al, 2005; Schwabe et al, 2005).
