putative DNA/chromatin-binding motif 1 |

The protein encoded by this gene has been identified originally as a carcinoma-associated cell surface glycoprotein (Ross et al, 1986). The corresponding gene has been called TROP1, based on the presence of the antigen in normal trophoblast cells (Fornaro et al, 1995).
This antigen has been identified by Lipinski et al (1981) by means of a monoclonal antibody raised against the human choriocarcinoma cell line BeWo. The antigen is expressed on syncytiotrophoblasts and cytotrophoblasts (Lipinski et al, 1981; Yagel et al, 1989). Partial sequence information from direct databank submissions show that TROP1 is identical with TACSTD1 [tumor-associated calcium signal transducer 1].
