[unc-51-like kinase 1] ULK1 is the mammalian counterpart of the Caenorhabditis elegans UNC51 [uncoordinated locomotion-51] gene, which encodes a serine/threonine kinase expressed almost exclusively in neurons. Mutations in this gene result in abnormal axonal extension and growth (Ogura et al, 1994).
The human ortholog has been cloned by Kuroyanagi et al (1998). Yan et al (1998) have cloned mouse ULK1. Tomoda et al (1999) have identified the mouse ortholog and referred to it as UNC51.1. Egan et al (2011) have identified ULK1 as the mammalian
