Zta is a sequence-specific DNA-binding protein encoded by Epstein-Barr virus (see: BZLF1). The protein transactivates early viral promoters and functions as a lytic switch transactivator that initiates the ordered cascade of Epstein-Barr virus gene expression during lytic viral infections.
Zta has been found to activate also the expression of secreted cellular factors such as Beta-IG-H3, and TGF-beta (which itself upregulates Beta-IG-H3 expression). Zta also upregulates expression of alpha 1 collagen type 4, which has been shown to potentiate the effects of TGF-beta (Cayrol and Flemington, 1995).
