Gene expression

This general term describes the processes of transcription and translation, i.e. the formation of mRNA mediated by specific RNA polymerases and transcription factors, and the formation of proteins, guided by mRNA sequences at the ribosomes, respectively. The mRNA transcribed from a gene (see also: orf), and also the protein obtained by translation of this mRNA is generally known as the gene product of the gene in question.
