These cells are called also enamel cells. Ameloblasts are the specialized enamel secreting epithelial cells of the teeth (For a morphological classification of rat incisor ameloblasts see: Warshawsky and Smith, 1974). Zajicek G (1976) have pointed out that the '-cyte' suffix should be used to refer to mature cells. Thus, ameloblasts mature to become amelocytes, the mature cells that secrete enamel. Note that the term amelocytes is hardly used but occurs in older references.
