abbr. AGUS; also AGCUS. This term (Nguyen HN and Nordqvist, 1999) is used by histologists/pathologists to describe the occurrence in Papanicolaou-stained specimens of atypical cells that show morphologic changes in glandular cells beyond those that are suggestive of the benign reactive process, but insufficient for the diagnosis of adenocarcinoma in situ. This diagnosis is relatively rare, but 20 to 50 % of the cases have been described to have significant histologic abnormalities, such as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia, adenocarcinoma in situ adenocarcinoma, or invasive cancers from sites other than the cervix (Kim et al, 1999; Kaferle JE and Malouin, 2001).
