abbr. AXO, AXOT. This protein is known also as MARCH7 [Membrane-associated RING finger protein 7] or RNF177 [RING finger protein 177]. Axotrophin is a putative E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase of unknown function that belongs to a group of ligases identified initially as viral immunoevasins involved in the downregulation of immunoreceptors. The activities of axotrophin are regulated by deubiquitylating enzymes (USP7, USP9X) (Nathans et al, 2008). Axotrophin is enriched in stem cells (Ramalho-Santos et al, 2002), neuronal cells (Nathan et al, 2008) and spermatids (Zhao et al, 2013).
