This Drosophila melanogaster protein is a member of a larger family of homeotic genes. Gene mutations show a phenotype resembling a duplication of the entire thorax (Bridges and Morgan, 1923). Bithorax is part of a large gene complex (termed the Bithorax complex, abbr. BX-C) (Martin et al, 1995) that controls the specification and development of the second thoracic segment, the abdomen, and the genital organs (Lewis, 1978; for overview see also: Maeda and Karch, 2010).
