Cathelin is a cysteine proteinase inhibitor of 96 amino acids isolated from pig leukocytes. Cathelin is an inhibitor of cathepsin L. The N-terminal residue of the inhibitor is pyrrolidone-carboxylic acid. (Ritonja et al, 1989). Cathelin B9 has been identified by Moscinski and Hill (1995) in murine granulocytes. Expression appears to be restricted to murine bone marrow, with the highest levels in cultures enriched for promyelocytes. Immunoelectron microscopy localizes the protein to neutrophilic granules.
Cathelin has been referred to also as PLCPI [Pig leukocyte cysteine proteinase inhibitor]. Lenarcic et al (1993) have isolated
