a term used by histologists to describe the staining behaviour of certain cells that stain dark brown after exposure to ammoniacal silver nitrate solution and subsequent fixation with dichromate solution. The term chromaffin cells usually pertains to a group of cells found in the adrenal medulla and tumors derived thereof (pheochromocytomas). See also: chromaffin cells, APUD cells.
Cells that are chromaffin are called also pheochrome cells or pheochromocytes. The term pheochromoblasts has been used for undifferentiated embryonic chromaffin cells.
