This term has multiple meanings:

These cells, known also as type 1 taste bud cells or type 1 gustatory cells (see also: taste bud cells), are found in taste buds (Azzali, 1997; Pumplin et al, 1997; Northcutt, 2004). They have a dark cytoplasm and are characterized by the presence of dense round granules, which are discharged into the taste pore by exocytosis (Takeda and Hoshino, 1975; Yamamoto and Ozawa, 1977).
The cells form synapses with sensory nerve cells (Kinnamon et al, 1985, 1988; Royer and Kinnamon, 1988) and probably act as gustatory receptor cells or supporting cells (McPheeters et al, 1994).
