[decapentaplegic] A gene (CG9885) isolated from the genome of Drosophila melanogaster. The C-terminus of dpp shows strong sequence homology (25-38 % amino acid identity) to members of the mammalian TGF-beta family, including inhibin and MIS [Müllerian inhibiting substance] (Padgett et al, 1967).
The dpp locus, which spans at least 55 kb, is involved in the dorsal-ventral development of the embryo and the morphogenesis of the imaginal disc (controlling the proliferation of epithelial cells). dpp is involved also in the organogenesis of the intestines. dpp protein shows homology with a protein isolated from Xenopus laevis cells, which also belongs to the TGF-beta
