one of the three primary germ layers forming from the epiblast during the process of gastrulation in the developing animal embryo. The other two cell layers are the ectoderm and the mesoderm.

The endoderm is the innermost layer of the developing embryo and gives rise to the epithelial cells lining the gut and the associated organs.

Signaling between all three germ layers is required for the differentiation of the three germ layers, their correct positioning and patterning along the vertebrate body axis, and, ultimately, the coordinated development of all organs (Grapin-Botton and Melton, 2000; Horb, 2000; Cleaver and Krieg, 2001; Shivdasani, 2002; Tam et al, 2003).
