this term pertains to a conceptual model describing the development of specialized cells that have reached their ultimate functional state and do not undergo further development (see also: differentiated cells).
Traditionally, the differentiation process is seen as one involving a well-defined hierarchy of cell types. It begins with the most pluripotent cells, i.e., cell types that have the capacity to develop into any of the specific cell types found in an organism (see also: stem cells). Various growth factors and cytokines act as differentiation factors or progression factors or maintenance factors
