[suicidal erythrocyte death] this term refers to the programmed cell death of erythrocytes observed in ageing or damaged erythrocytes (Lang et al, 2006). This is in analogy to apoptosis, a term that does not apply because erythrocytes are devoid of nuclei and mitochondria. The term eryptotic death refers to the same phenomenon.
