Erythrocytes (red blood cells; abbr. RBC) are the most abundant cell types in blood. The process of their formation is called erythropoiesis (see also: hematopoiesis).
With the exception of mammals, vertebrate erythrocytes are nucleated. In mammals, mature red blood cells are flexible, oval, biconcave disks that also lack organelles, and ribosomes (for overview see: Moras et al, 2017).
