ferroptosis
[ferroptotic]
This term, coined by Dixon et al (2012), refers to an oxidative non-apoptotic form of cell death, termed also iron-dependent cell death, that is morphologically, biochemically, and genetically distinct from apoptosis, necrosis, and autophagy, and crucially depends on intracellular iron metabolism but no other metal ions. It was observed originally to occur in response to the oncogenic Ras-selective lethal small molecule erastin and has been observed in cancer cells and glutamate-induced cell death in organotypic rat
