A type of cell death classically defined as being caused by severe (non-physiological) physical and/or chemical insults and usually affecting groups of cells (rather than individual cells) as is the case during apoptosis, which initially was called shrinkage necrosis) (for nomenclature see also: Levin, 1998; Levin et al, 1999; Majno and Joris, 1995). Levin et al (1999) have recommended the use of the term necrosis to describe findings comprising dead cells in histological sections, regardless of the pathway by which the cells died.
