This computer-generated list of hormones is a compilation of factors (including acronyms and abbreviations) included in the COPE encyclopedia. This list partially overlaps with entries for regulatory peptide factors, which comprise lower molecular weight peptides and oligopeptides. Many of the factors in this list are known primarily by their physiological activities as classical hormones. As discussed in the entry about cytokines, the difference between growth factors, cytokines, and hormones is a bit floating.
Please note that COPE entries about hormones do not deal primarily with the well known hormone activities and their physiological effects. Instead, these entries focus on activities as mitogens, morphogens, motogens and chemoattractants, or the modulation of biological processes that are topics of the COPE encyclopedia (for example, angiogenesis, apoptosis and others (see also: CytokineTopics).
Also note: COPE entries for hormones are restricted currently to peptide and protein hormones. Not covered are: Amine-derived hormones such as catecholamines (adrenaline (epinephrine), dopamine, noradrenaline (norepinephrine), tryptophan derivatives (melatonin, serotonin), tyrosine derivatives (thyroxine, triiodothyronine), Steroid and sterol hormones (Glucocorticoids (cortisol), Mineralocorticoids (aldosterone), Sex steroids (Androgens, estrogens, progestagens), as well as lipid and phospholipid hormones (eicosanoids, prostaglandins, leukotrienes, prostacyclin, thromboxane).
