abbr. IAP (a term with multiple meanings). IAP is an alpha 1-acid glycoprotein that is produced mainly by macrophages. It exhibits various types of immunosuppressive activities.
IAP lacks disease specificity but it has been shown to increase in the serum of patients with inflammatory neurological diseases and has been described as a tumor associated marker in some solid tumors and hematological diseases.
Serum IAP levels can serve as a tumor marker in some tumor patients, with levels decreasing after surgery and increasing with recurrence and poor prognosis. IAP levels have been used for evaluating clinical course, therapeutic effectiveness, and prognosis of patients with various malignant tumors.
