[microprotein]
This term has been coined by Fricker (2010). It refers to small peptides, mainly derived from the N- or C-termini of cystosolic, mitochondrial, nuclear, lysosomal, or membrane proteins. These microproteins appear to refer, at least partially, to what others have called cryptides, and there is an overlap also with what has been referred to as non-classical neuropeptides.
It is not known yet whether these small peptides are secreted from cells. They may play an intracellular role to modulate protein-protein interactions. Their activities may overlap with those of non-classical neuropeptides (Fricker, 2010).
