[mitoptotic]
This term has been used to describe a form of cell death by mitochondrial suicide. Mitoptosis is mediated by reactive oxygen species, which cause the opening of the permeability transition pores in the inner mitochondrial membrane (see also: Venditti et al, 2013). Massive mitoptosis can cause cell death due to the release into the cytosol of cell death proteins normally hidden within mitochondrial intermembrane spaces (Skulachev, 2006).
Geminard et al (2002) have cited clearance of mitochondria from cells during the last step of red cell maturation as a case of mitoptosis that does not result in cell death. For a related process see also: mitophagy
