The production of myeloid cells (granulocytes and monocytes) from myeloid progenitor cells. This process involves the combinatorial effects of several key transcription factors that influence cellular lineage during hematopoiesis (Rosmarin et al, 2005).

Myelopoiesis in zebrafish has been shown to involve conserved genetic pathways and nearly identical hematopoeitic cell lineages to those found in mammals and other higher vertebrates. For these reasons, zebrafish are useful models for studying myelopoiesis (Berman et al, 2005; Xu et al, 2012).
