a term referring to antigen-presenting cells of the brain that are capable of taking up dead neurons by phagocytosis (Angelov et al, 1998). These cells are distinct from astroglial cells and microglial cells and stain for antigens characteristic of perivascular cells in the vicinity of the basal lamina of the cerebral vasculature. Immunostaining identifies these cells as macrophages or a subpopulation of such cells. As stated by Angelov et al (1998) these cells differ from pericytes, which are not able to perform phagocytosis.
