The gene for this protein is expressed in cultured rat mammary epithelial cells when they undergo a change from cuboidal to elongated myoepithelial-like cells (Barraclough et al, 1984, 1987). The protein is a calcium binding protein belonging to the family of S100 proteins and has been given the designation S100A4.
