This term is used sometimes to refer to any kind of cell death as the result of traumatic insults (for example caused by biomechanical injury, ischemia, or hypothermia). It is used frequently in the context of traumatic brain/nervous system injuries.
Often primary cell death may refer to necrosis but the use of this term does not necessarily refer to any specific mechanism underlying cell death.
The term secondary cell death in this context usually refers to indirect consequences of the primary insult. It may be the consequence of an inflammatory cascade that follows injury, the excessive release of cytotoxic substances, or vascular damage caused by the primary insult.
