This is the upprocessed precursor of the neurotrophin NGF [nerve growth factor]. Harrington et al (2004) have reported that after brain injury, expression of proNGF is induced and the factor is secreted in an active form capable of triggering cell death by apoptosis in culture. proNGF acts as a pathophysiological ligand for p75LNGFR in vivo. Disruption of this binding results in complete rescue of injured adult corticospinal neurons, suggesting that proNGF binding to p75LNGFR is responsible for the death of adult corticospinal neurons after lesion.
