[procytokine]
This term has been used to describe cellular proteins that have no signal transduction activities themselves. Alternative splicing or natural proteolysis, however, results in the formation of specific fragments with extracelluar functions. The fragments are potent cytokines that interact with specific receptors on cell surfaces. Examples are Tyrosyl-tRNA synthetase and Tryptophanyl-tRNA synthetase, which give rise to fragments that can be released extracellularly and act as an angiogenesis factor.
