The cytoplasm of these cells is filled with mucin vacuoles that push the nucleus to one side of the cell and under the microscope the cells have the appearance of a signet ring (Sato et al, 1973; Mohr et al, 1970; Yamashiro et al, 1977; Kimoto et al, 1983).
These cells are malignant epithelial mucus-producing cells that are found in some adenocarcinomas of the stomach and the gastrointestinal tract but also occur at other sites, such as in breast cancers (Fadare, 2006; Frost et al, 1995; Yoshida, 1992), cervical carcinoma (Kupryjanczyk and Kujawa, 1992), Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia (Molero et al, 1998), melanoma
