gene symbol tl. Mutations in this rat gene cause osteopetrosis, complete absence of osteoclasts and a profound deficiency of peritoneal macrophages. toothless is a naturally occurring, autosomal recessive mutation and is due to mutations in the gene encoding M-CSF (Dobbins et al, 2002; Van Wesenbeeck et al, 2002). Teeth form but fail to erupt. Treatment of homozygous toothless rats with M-CSF activates bone resorption by osteoclasts, permits tooth eruption, and up-regulates the immunoreactivity of bone marrow mononuclear cells to growth hormone receptor and IGF-1.
