Osteoclasts are rare large, multinucleated, terminally differentiated cells formed by the fusion of mononuclear hematopoietic precursors (Horowitz and Lorenzo, 2004; Roodman, 1996). Osteoclasts are cells involved in bone resorption, which is an essential part of the growth, modeling and remodeling of the skeleton (removal of old bone and synthesis of new bone) (Jilka, 2003; Tanaka et al, 2003). Thus, the term bone-resorbing cells is often used synonymously (see also: osteoclast-like cells). The cells are also generally referred to as osteoclastic cells or bone-destroying cells
