[tufted cell]
tufted cells are relay neurons in the olfactory bulb. Their somata are scattered more superficially within the deep, intermediate and superficial sublayers of the external plexiform layer and the deep part of the glomerular layer (Macrides and Schneider, 1982; Orona et al, 1984; Mouradian and Scott, 1988). These neurons share many anatomical and physiological features with mitral cells. However, there are differences regarding mainly the distribution of their secondary dendrites and axons, projection patterns, and their responsiveness to electrical stimulation of the olfactory nerves, and tufted cells themselves do not form a homogeneous population (see: Macrides et al, 1985 for overview; Griff et al, 2008).
