2C

[Avian encephalomyelitis virus 2C protein] Avian encephalomyelitis virus (AEV), the closely related hepatitis A virus (Marvil et al, 1999), and some other picorna viruses contain this gene. The nonstructural 2C protein is involved in RNA synthesis and plays an important role in the assembly of mature virions and membrane association. The protein contains NTP binding motifs (Gorbalenya et al, 1988, 1989).

Liu et al (2004) have reported that the 2C protein of AEV is involved in cell death by apoptosis. Protein 2C localizes to mitochondria, triggers the efflux of cytochrome C into the cytosol, and activates caspase-9 and caspase-3.
