The A4GALT gene encodes alpha-1,4-galactosylstransferase, an enzyme that transfers a galactose to the alpha-1,4 position of lactosylceramide to form globotriaosylceramide (Gb3). This glycolipid has been characterized on red blood cells as the P(k) antigen of the P blood group system. The A4GALT synthase has been cloned by Kojima et al (2000) and Steffensen (2000).
The A4GALT enzyme is known also as CD77 synthase, EC2.4.1.228, Lactosylceramide 4-alpha-galactosyltransferase, Gal-beta-1-4Glc-beta-1-Cer alpha-1,4-galactosyltransferase, Globotriaosylceramide/CD77 synthase, P1 antigen (P1 synthase), P(k) antigen synthase.
