[a disintegrin and metalloprotease domain 25; ADAM metallopeptidase domain 25] The gene encoding this member of the ADAM protein family of metalloproteases has been identified by Zhu et al (199) in a search of proteases that may function in spermatogenesis or fertilization. The gene appears to encode a testis-specific protease and the gene is transcribed in spermatogenic cells in a regulated pattern at a specific developmental stage. The authors have named this protease testase 2, in view of its tissue-specific expression. Bolcun et al (2003) have reported the existence of two distinct testase 2 genes, which they call testase 2-alpha and testase 2-beta
