[Activation-induced cell death] This term is being used to describe cell death occurring in immune cells after, and induced by, cell activation (Green et al, 2003). The processes involved essentially are those generally observed with apoptosis, i.e., AICD is a type of programmed cell death as opposed to accidental cell death generally referred to as necrosis. The mechanisms that trigger AICD after cell activation (or protect cells against it), such as receptors and signaling pathways involved (death receptor activation and the mechanisms that regulate their expression), and the internal targets affected (such as extrinsic apoptosis, intrinsic apoptosis
