[Apoptosis signal-regulating kinase 2] This name is based on sequence homology to ASK1, a member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase (MAP3K) family that has been implicated in cell death by apoptosis, stress responses, and various diseases. Other designations are MAP3K6 (MAPKKK6) [mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase kinase 6], MEKK6 [MAP/ERK kinase kinase 6].
The human gene encoding this protein has been cloned by Wang et al (1998). ASK2 has been shown to interact with ASK1. ASK2 weakly activates the JNK but not the ERK or p38
