(autocrine growth factor; sometimes abbreviated: AGF) A term referring to a mechanism of growth control, called also autostimulatory growth control, in which a cell secretes a soluble factor (see also: Conditioned medium) that binds to its receptor, which is expressed also by the factor-producing cell. This effectively creates an autogenous loop in which a product (for example, cytokines) acts back on the cells that produce it. The term autocrines has been used in a generic sense to refer to such factors.
